Highveld Reading and Writing Studios can support the development of your work, and you as a literary artist. Here is how I go about it.
Evaluation and recommendation: R4,800
You send me 4-6 pages of your work, a brief description of your project, and a brief description of what you think you need and why. Your project can be at any stage – from vague idea to finished draft. I may ask you for additional input. I return your pages, edited line by line, and including in-line comments, plus an overarching description of your work’s strengths and weaknesses, and an outline of what I think you need. If you decide to go ahead with me, together we design a programme that can include: writing exercises; reading assignments; other creative experiments; email, phone or face-to-face conversations; and editing and revisions.
The cost of this evaluation and recommended way forward is R4,800, including the programme design we will undertake together. I require this payment upfront. You will be buying a high level engagement with your work, whether you decide to go ahead with me or not.
Rates for your programme
I cost the programme we work out based on the following rates:
Reading: R600/2,800 words
Exercises, assignments, experiments and conversations: R600/session
Developmental editing: 50c/word
Line editing: 40c/word
Copy editing: 30c/word
I invoice you at intervals we will have agreed on.
I am unlikely to want just to edit your work. I prefer to inspire, support and teach you to write in ways that satisfy you. I am more interested in engaging with your intentions and expanding the range of your expressive capacities than in showing you what I think you should do via, say, a line edit. I like to make suggestions and then watch what you do with them. We reflect on the effects in you and on your work, and integrate the learning into your creative practice. Sometimes a detailed line edit is the best way to inspire, support and teach someone. But it isn’t all I want to give you.
I can refer you to excellent, experienced editors if regular editing is what you would prefer. Many of them provide mentoring and other forms of support as part of their deal.
Email 4-6 pages of your work, a brief description of your project, and a brief description of what you think you need and why to firstname.lastname@example.org. If I think we can work together, I’ll ask for your payment and then deliver my evaluation and recommendation within an agreed time.
